Since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, the urban poor communities residing in slums have been highly vulnerable on account of their occupation, unhygienic/ill maintained conditions of WASH facilities in the residing areas and high level of misperception regarding disease transmission. To tackle this, there is an urgent need to elevate the role of Risk Communication and Community Engagement (RCCE) in breaking the chains of transmission and mitigating the impact of the COVID-19, with a focus on appropriate and adequate information on Infection Prevention and Control (IPC) encouraging behavioural change and ensuring safety through facilitating access to Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and hygiene kits and WASH supplies.
Under the ‘Community outreach for promotion of IPC through WASH supplies and service delivery in vulnerable groups of urban Maharashtra’ project, the Coalition facilitated promotion of WASH and COVID Appropriate Behaviour (CAB) and service delivery of WASH supplies linked to the feedback and monitoring mechanism, with an involvement of key local stakeholders that have better reach to the targeted communities. The interventions were designed as a ‘Hub and Spoke’ model to ensure decentralization of efforts with cohesion of best practices. The activities were coordinated by the Secretariat, Maharashtra Urban WASH-ES Coalition (Hub) at the RCUES of AIILSG, Mumbai and implemented by the selected partner organisations (Spokes) in selected cities of Maharashtra.
