MAHARASHTRA URBAN WASH & ENVIRONMENTAL SANITATION COALITION 

It is a joint initiative of the Regional Centre for Urban and Environmental Studies (RCUES) of All India Institute of Local Self Government (AIILSG), Mumbai and UNICEF Maharashtra. The Coalition brings together local organisations, thought-institutions, and sector experts to strengthen municipal capacities and encourage collaborative action to enhance service delivery in WASH (Water, Sanitation and Hygiene) in urban Maharashtra.

The Secretariat of the Maharashtra Urban WASH-Environmental Sanitation (ES) Coalition is anchored at RCUES of AIILSG Mumbai. With a dedicated team of domain experts in WASH, urban governance, urban policy, and communications and partnerships, it functions to foster collective action in the achievement of our common urban WASH and Environmental Sanitation goals

Set-up as a state-level knowledge platform, the Coalition incubates local strategies and focused interventions to drive sustainable initiatives in WASH across cities and districts of Maharashtra. To influence bottom-up changes in WASH, the Maharashtra Urban WASH-ES Coalition works to uphold the agency of a gamut of stakeholders working in various diverse focus areas in WASH, including faecal sludge and septage management, community sanitation, plastic waste management, environmental education in schools, menstrual hygiene management, among others.

from emergency response to long-term integrated development in WASH

To support the efforts of the local governments towards infection prevention and control of communicable diseases, the Coalition led an initiative to elevate the role of RCCE and reinforce WASH appropriate behaviour to prevent the spread of infection in high densities urban slums areas and build resilience among vulnerable groups.

Focusing on the humanitarian to development continuum – the Secretariat is looking forward to work around these ideas and the potential opportunities for further collaborations and partnerships in the cities of Maharashtra keeping AMRUT 2.0, SBM 2.0 as the focus.
